Too much heavy lifting in the foundry a few weeks ago (building the ceramic shell molds for Simone Jumps) put me in bed for four days with the Screamin' Lower Back Pain Blues. My doctor called in a prescription for Tramadol, which didn't do anything for the pain but seemed to give me a shot of creative adrenalin, so that even in excruciating agony I felt strangely euphoric and seized by an irresistible need to draw! The first things I grabbed were a blue ballpoint pen and the book on my night table, The Painter's Workshop by W. G. Constable, and I started drawing in the pages of the book. Janet brought a sketchpad and other pens, but I loved the way the blue ink looked over the black text! I drew Janet at her laptop, a mirror self-portrait and other things in the room but mostly just stuff out of my head--a sketch for a monotype I want to do, Raye from memory of our last modeling session, whatever came out of the end of the pen. It all looked great to me at the time-- not so great after the pain subsided and the drug wore off, but here are a few examples................................................................
