My inspiration for this medium comes from the great monotypes of Giovanni Benedetto Castiglioni (the inventor of the technique), Degas and William Merrit Chase. Like them, I use a basically subtractive method, meaning that the plate is rolled up with printer's ink and the design wiped and scraped out with rags, sticks, fingers, whatever. These were done on linoleum (instead of the usual copper or plexiglass) and printed on my etching press.

Working on a self-portrait, 2016

The two monotypes to the right represent a kind of transitional stage between my linocut technique (q.v.) and the other monotypes on this page. They are done like the linocuts (white ink over dark) except that the design is not cut but only drawn and wiped out of the white ink, letting the black areas show through when it's printed. The highlights are heightened with oil paint.
